Pay to Snooze: an alarm where snoozing has a price

Pay to snooze is an alarm clock feature that puts a price on hitting snooze. In Rise, you choose a token cost before bed. Each snooze spends that many tokens from your wallet, while getting up and dismissing the alarm is free. It's optional, and it's there to make the first alarm the easy choice.

Rise is an Android alarm clock first. Pay to Snooze is the part that helps you get up.

How Pay to Snooze works

You choose a token cost before bed, and each snooze spends that many tokens from your wallet. Dismissing the alarm costs nothing.

  1. Set the price. When you set your alarm, you set the token cost per snooze, per alarm, with no minimum and no maximum. You can switch it off for that alarm and leave the snooze free.
  2. Snooze or get up. When the alarm rings, you can still snooze. Each snooze spends the amount you chose. The price is locked once the alarm rings, so it cannot be changed after bedtime or while it is ringing. Getting up and dismissing the alarm is free.
  3. Morning is easier. The decision was made the night before, when you were awake.

You also set your own snooze length. It is adjustable, and the default is 9 minutes.

Do tokens cost real money?

Yes. You buy tokens in packs of 10 for £0.89, 50 for £3.49, and 200 for £8.99. They sit in your Rise wallet, where you can see the balance. You set the token cost per snooze, per alarm, with no minimum and no maximum. Tokens do not expire.

Your card is never charged automatically. You only pay when you choose to buy a token pack. The referral programme also gives you 10 tokens for each new member you refer.

Tokens only matter if you turn the feature on. When your balance reaches zero, snoozing goes back to being free. Dismissing the alarm costs nothing either way.

If you were looking for an alarm clock that charges you money, you pay for a pack, not at the alarm.

Why putting a price on snoozing helps

A price on snoozing helps because you decide at night, while you are awake, rather than while you are half-asleep and groggy.

Snoozing happens on autopilot. Sundelin and colleagues, in a 2023 paper in the Journal of Sleep Research, found the most common reason is feeling too tired to get up. A cost you set earlier makes “five more minutes” a conscious choice.

This is a commitment device: a consequence you choose in advance, so your morning self follows it. Rise is not clinically proven, and it will not guarantee you stop hitting snooze. It is a nudge you choose.

Pay to Snooze is optional

Pay to Snooze is optional. Underneath it, Rise is built to do the basics of an alarm clock well, and a normal alarm still works with no snooze cost.

Turn it on for the mornings that matter, such as a weekday alarm or an early flight, and leave it off for the rest. You can switch it off for each alarm. One alarm can carry a token cost, and another can stay a plain alarm.

An alarm clock first

Rise is an alarm clock first. The basics stay in place whether or not you put a price on snooze.

How Pay to Snooze differs from puzzle and mission alarms

Many anti snooze alarm clock apps make you solve a puzzle, scan an object, or complete a challenge before the alarm stops. Rise does not. You get up, or you spend tokens to stay in bed.

Some apps charge real money for each snooze. Rise does not charge your card when the alarm rings. You spend tokens you already hold. Mission alarms suit some people. Rise is for a calm screen and a decision made the night before.

Who Pay to Snooze is for

It is for mornings when you want a reason to get up.

If you sleep through alarms completely, or you are always exhausted, a price on snooze will not fix that. Look at your sleep first, or speak to a doctor.

Pay to Snooze FAQ

What is pay to snooze?

Pay to snooze is an alarm clock feature that puts a price on hitting snooze. In Rise, you choose a token cost before bed. Each snooze spends that many tokens from your wallet. Getting up and dismissing the alarm is free. It is optional, and it is there to make the first alarm the easy choice.

How does a pay to snooze alarm work?

You set it up in three steps. You set the token cost per snooze, per alarm, with no minimum and no maximum. When it rings, snoozing spends those tokens from your wallet, and dismissing the alarm is free. You made that choice the night before, while you were awake. Snooze length is adjustable, and the default is 9 minutes.

Where do Rise tokens come from?

You buy tokens in the app. Packs are 10 tokens for £0.89, 50 for £3.49, and 200 for £8.99. They go into your wallet, and you can see the balance. You can also earn tokens by referring someone: you get 10 tokens for each new member you refer.

Do tokens cost real money?

Yes. A token pack is a real purchase in the app: 10 tokens for £0.89, 50 for £3.49, or 200 for £8.99. You set the token cost per snooze, per alarm, with no minimum and no maximum. Tokens do not expire. Your card is never charged automatically. You only pay when you choose to buy a pack.

Can I change the snooze price in the morning?

No. The price is locked once the alarm rings, so it cannot be changed after bedtime or while it is ringing. You made that choice the night before, while you were awake.

Does Rise charge my card when I snooze?

No. Snoozing spends tokens from your wallet. It does not charge your card. You only pay when you choose to buy a token pack, and nothing is charged automatically. Dismissing the alarm spends nothing. At a zero balance, snoozing goes back to being free.

What happens if I run out of tokens?

When your balance reaches zero, snoozing goes back to being free. You are not asked to pay at the alarm. Dismissing still costs nothing, whether you have tokens left or not. You can buy another pack later if you want a token cost on snoozing again.

Do I have to use Pay to Snooze?

No. It is optional, and you can switch it off for each alarm. A normal alarm works with no snooze cost. Use it for a weekday alarm or an early flight, and leave it off for the rest. Tokens only apply when you turn it on.

Does paying to snooze actually work?

It makes snoozing a conscious choice you set the night before, rather than a tap while you are half asleep. That is the help it offers. It is not a guarantee, and Rise is not clinically proven to stop snoozing. If it does not suit you, switch it off.

Is snoozing bad for you?

Not in a simple way, and this is not medical advice. A small lab study found that a snooze alarm prolonged sleep inertia, the groggy period after waking, compared with one alarm. Research on healthy habitual snoozers found that 30 minutes of snoozing was mostly harmless for them. If you are exhausted every day, look at your sleep, or speak to a doctor.

Is Rise available on iPhone?

Not yet. Rise is built natively for Android, and that is where you can get it on Google Play today. An iOS version is coming soon. Until that version is out, the wallet, the snooze price, and the alarm clock itself are on Android only.
